Day 199: En Route

Day 199: En Route

Hey. That's a nice picture of a train going by at 200 MILES PER HOUR. But wait? You say it was taken from a train that was ALSO GOING 200 MILES PER HOUR!?!?! THAT's LIKE A 400 MILE PER HOUR MOTION BLUR STEVE! I know, dear viewer. That's exactly what this is. And such is the magic of TGV trains.

So today was nice. We set out from Lacoste after lunch, and bussed to the Avignon TGV station where we trained our way to PARIS, where we will spend the entire week. I AM SO EXCITED. Let me tell you how the rest of the night went.

We checked into our hotel (the Hotel Home Latin, in the Latin district of Paris) Then all took off in a big group (about 30 of us) to go to Le Grand Rex, where we found out the movie (HP7.2) was only in french, with no subtitles whatsoever. Most of the group headed out to dinner saddened, but Kelsey, Laurel, Alice, Me, and a few others stuck around to see it anyway. Turned out to actually be a very entertaining movie, and I felt we could appreciate it even more without the dialogue in some senses, while of course we missed a lot of the detail brought by dialogue. Oh well, it works out. After the movie we slowly and carefully made our way back across paris (through some kinda sketchy parts) to the hotel at 1 AM. We made it back alive, and totally stoked for the rest of our week in the city of love. Lots more to come.

Oh. One more thing to add: late that night hunter and I thought of grabbing a bike and going for a ride, but we figured out you had to buy tickets from a shop, all of which were closed. he promptly went to bed. I ended up scoping out the online site and swung a week's pass for 8 euro. SO EXCITED. I ran outside to the bike posts just a block down the street from our hotel, grabbed my first ever bike in Paris, and biked my way all the way to the Tour de Eiffel! SO EXCITED. By the time I got there around 2 it had been off for an hour (everything in paris turns off/closes at 1) and took a few cell phone pictures which I later posted on my blog. What an excellent night it was. Looking forward to returning to the tour de eiffel VERY soon :) HUZZAH for paris!

Auberge de Cassagne

Auberge de Cassagne

On the outskirts of the medieval city of Avignon, the Auberge de Cassagne occupies a grand chateau dating back to 1850.This plus its proximity to some of the worlds most respected vineyards is reason enough for a visit, but the Auberges unbeatable combination of top-quality service and bucolic charm is what places it above all other hotels in the area.Once over the threshold, guests are plunged into a warm and harmonious atmosphere. A gate in a high wall leads to the garden, where plane trees shade the restaurant terrace and paths wind through greenery and flowers to the pool. The relaxed feeling continues into the bedrooms, all of which feature regional antiques and intimate porches with pool or garden views. Their fresh Provencal prints remind you that you are in the heart of a region famous for some of the most beautiful fabrics since the 18th century.Last but certainly not least, the Auberge owes its culinary reputation to head chef Philippe Boucher, who has presided over the kitchen since 1983. Gourmets hotel guests and locals alike keep coming back for a taste of his traditional yet innovative cuisine, which makes the most of the wonderful local produce.

Nighttrain tot Prague

Nighttrain tot Prague

Nighttrain to Prague with CNL engins 189 090 and 189 092
This train looked very decent.

All cars are painted white/red. Most nighttrains do have cars in different paintings, as those are from different compagnies.
The engines were the 189 090 and 189 092 as hired by transporter CNL (City Night Line).

The engines were relative fresh in charge by CNL. And relative short! A month later the CNL returned those to the owner. The engines gets leased again to other compagnies for cargo trains.

The life cyclus of the engines in front of the Nighttrains was thereby extremely short! Economically you can argue about the benefits of hiring this machines.

The 189 class engines are very expensive and needs many duties a week to get profitable. I doubt about that, as there are not many nighttrains and most runs in the weekends. Statistically the the engines has stand still long times during the week. Else said costing hell of money and does not bring in a dime. This is the cost element

On the benefit element this. The financial crisis of 2008 had effects on traffic. Some economic laws proceed huge decline in passengers on intercontinental air transports. On continental transport the same happened but in a milder form. I wonder how it works out on the european nighttrain network. Normally a continental train is a bit more expensive and far more luxury as an airplane. Compare the levels of a TGV Amsterdam- Paris or an Airplane

The price range of nighttrain is however totally different as the day light variants of continental transport. Instead of more expensive as an Airplane, the costprice is at relative the same level. That means the following interesting issue in economics. Only If the change of passengers in % is the same as on airplanes, that CAN mean price is the only arguement on choise an airplane or a train. That is a tendency; it is not enough as prove, but good enough to set direction.

If both figures are not the same -the change of % in travellers by airplanes and trains on continental travels differs-, factors as luxury, time, easy acces to city centres or direct connecting can make the difference;

The weight of the factors can only made visible by comparing the change in % from the nighttrains with the the excisting International trains at day, grouped in the subcategories normal speedtrain and high speed train. If the travellers mutations can be split at those levels, it can be clear if the financial crisis had more impact on the nighttrains and if therefore in hinsight it was irresponsible to hire two relative expensive engines! This is a sample on the tools , with all the factors. The good factors in favor of the nighttrain are pro's. The weak factors, where the plaine is better are con's.

Lets focus again on the engines. Otherwise I would teach economics in the total context for CNL. It is important, but as photographers it can be dealt with the engine
If the choise ior the 189 is done for the technical arguement of time only, I can tell that the airplanes and even the evening highspeed trains offer shorter travelling times as the relative slow nighttain.
Imago? Imago is in economical terms not a technical argument. It is more the sum of pro factors. If imago is the main reason for hiring this machines, it is seriously doubtfull in what way CNL is able to run a business.

Imago is not worthless, but as said not a factor Lets explain it simple.
Mr A. Wants to go to Prague as cheap as possible. He decide for the train. it is price equal. His second argument is that he can sleep in the train and spare a hotel overnight. Only a strong imago of the airplane company could change on this second argument. Price is already decided.

Mr T likes to run in his A team bus. However that is past he has no bus. He has one argument. As fast as possible. Mr T. take the plane. "cossa, the train takes the whole night. Now I can count the hours.
Only a new A team bus can change his mind; but the train? no way man that takes time. And the bus; that is his only imago

This thesis is important because in the netherlands many engines of the 1600 series are umemployed, just in Germany are some engines unemployed or listed for the scrapyards.. It could mean running the trains with "old engines" from unemployed cargo or passengersengines could be much cheaper and in factors of time and luxury on equal value. On costs the win is an enormous surplus, leading to a more effective economica balance.

If imago only was the trigger to hire this engines, it means the CNL organisation has a problem with a dominant Marketing department and an ineffective economical de
